4th Grade Community Service Activity — Annual Pumpkin Bread Tradition!

It has been a Curtis tradition for over 20 years for our students to bake pumpkin bread as a community service project for the St. Joseph Center, which partners with the Los Angeles Clippers and distributes baskets for Thanksgiving to the many families in need that reside in Venice and Santa Monica. These baskets are filled with food that makes a traditional Thanksgiving feast. This year, St. Joseph has more families in need than ever before and they hope that our 4th graders, together with our school’s Roots & Shoots community service organization, can again bake 500 loaves of pumpkin bread!

We need your help to make this incredible effort a success!

Donating Ingredients - Due by Wednesday, November 16
Please feel free to drop off any amount of ingredients that your family is comfortable donating. Your student can bring the items to their homeroom/home base classroom or leave items in the designated drop-off area in the Circle each morning until Wednesday, November 16. Any excess items we do not use for baking will be donated to the St. Joseph Center’s food bank.

Baking At Home - Drop off on November 18
Parents may also bake the recipe on November 17 at home and bring the baked loaves to campus on November 18 at morning drop-off in the Circle when we will collect them. The loaves take about an hour to bake and a large oven can fit about 16 loaves at a time. We ask that you please follow this recipe (makes three loaves), and use an aluminum baking pan size of 8.5” x 4.5” x 2.5”. The loaves should be brought to school in their aluminum baking pans. We will wrap them for delivery to St. Joseph Center.

This is the time of year for giving! We appreciate all the families who are interested in being a part of this special community service event. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Debra Cohen or Debbie Taus-Kahn.
